Estonia: The Efficiency of a Digital Country

Estonia is considered the world’s most advanced digital society, with only two government services needing to be done in-person: getting married or getting divorced.

Estonia is considered the world’s most advanced digital society, with only two government services needing to be done in-person: getting married or getting divorced.

Estonian society runs almost exclusively online, with citizens using government portals to file their taxes, manage their businesses, access educational resources and locate medical records and prescriptions online. Because of this, Estonia enjoys unprecedented levels of transparency in governance, and has built significant trust within its citizenry for its processes.

This allowed Estonia to function normally during COVID-19 lockdowns as all of its services remained available online. Estonia’s e-governance structure allows the government and citizens alike to save time and money; up to thousands of years and tens of thousands of Euros.
